What The Video Shows This video shows a direct comparison between what it takes to crank an engine with regular camshafts and with the new S&S Easy Start cams.
Two brand new, fully charged batteries are installed in two nearly identical bikes. Both bikes have the same displacement, compression ratio, and cam timing, but one bike has S&S Easy Start cams.
The spark plug wires are pulled off both bikes so the engines wouldn't start, and the starter buttons on both bikes are simultaneously depressed. Before long, the bike with regular cams has a dead battery and stops cranking, but the bike with the Easy Start cams just keeps going. The spark plug wires are put back on and the bike with Easy Start cams starts right up.
Proof positive that Easy Start cams live up to their name.
Here's How They Work Each of the two exhaust cam lobes are equipped with a spring loaded compression release lever on the "heel" of the cam at the point where the valve would normally be fully closed. The lever holds the exhaust valve open slightly at cranking speed. This releases some of the compression, making the engine much easier to crank. Once the engine starts, and rpm increases, the compression release lever is centrifugally retracted and the engine runs normally, with full compression, and without any loss in performance. This allows a stock starter and battery to start nearly any engine. That can be especially good news to owners of custom bikes that are sometimes designed with fairly small batteries for appearance sake.
